Resource Recovery & Waste Management Facilities
Blaxland and Katoomba both have a Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facility. Find out about the services they provide for residents.
Blue Mountains City Council will provide a weekly green bin service for each household, between 13 - 31 January. Residents will be able to put their red and green bins out for collection every week during this period. Yellow bins will go out as normal (fortnightly).
For full details, read the Extra green bin service Media Release.
We introduced our standard household waste service after two years of research. This involved extensive discussion with the local community.
Our standard waste service is made up of the following kerbside collections:
It is a NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) recommended best practice waste service.
If the standard service does not suit your household, alternative bin sizes include:
For more information you can download the Domestic Waste Service: Bin Form from the bottom of this page .
As well as our weekly kerbside collection service, we have many other services available to deal with all types of waste.
We’re making it easier for residents to reduce rubbish, sort waste properly and recycle more.

Tips to ‘get it right on bin night’
Your household bin collection takes place on the same day every week.
Each week you will take out two bins. Your red garbage bin with either your green garden bin OR your yellow recycling bin. This is because recycling and garden waste collections take place on alternate weeks.
Check the sticker on the side of your green garden bin to see if it is a Week A or Week B collection. You can reference this against the bin collection calendar.
Make sure your bins are on the kerb by 5am on your collection day and stay out until emptied.
Download our bin collection calendar or call us on (02) 4780 5000 to find out your collection day.
Check the illustration below for tips to 'get it right on bin night'. Otherwise the trucks may not be able to empty your bins.
Your red bin is for your weekly kerbside garbage collection. We’ve recently reduced the size of the red garbage bin as this is the waste that goes to landfill.
Regular bin audits show us:
We want to encourage residents to view their red bin as a last resort.
If you have considered the following options, and landfill is the only way to go, then place the waste in your red bin.
Your yellow bin is for your kerbside recycling, collected every fortnight. This is for all household recyclable packaging.
Please note each local Council may accept different items for recycling. For example we can recycle hard plastic meat trays, whereas some Council’s may not accept them. It depends on which processing facility they use.

What about the new return and earn scheme?
The NSW Government’s largest litter reduction scheme ‘Return and Earn’ started on 1 December, 2017. The Container Deposit Scheme enables people to ‘return and earn’ by returning used beverage containers to nominated collection points to receive a 10c return per container.
You can continue to place your drink containers in your yellow lid bin for recycling as usual. Kerbside recycling remains very important to our community. Return and Earn is designed to complement kerbside recycling by reducing litter and encouraging people to recycle drink containers when away from home.
Please note - if you put your eligible containers in your household recycling bin, you won’t receive the NSW Government’s 10 cent refund.
For more information about the scheme please visit Return and earn.
Your green bin is for your fortnightly kerbside garden vegetation collection. This is for any garden vegetation you can’t use or compost at home such as grass clippings, weeds and prunings.
If you have a major garden clean up and end up with branches that are too big for the bin, we also provide a free kerbside chipping service, click here.
