Updated Facility hours

Waste Management Facility opening hours are currently:

  • Blaxland Waste Management Facility
    • 8am – 4.45pm, 7 days a week.
  • Katoomba Waste Management Facility
    • 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday
    • 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.  

Social distancing and on-site safety

To ensure the safety of staff and the community, strict restrictions will apply, including:

  • Only four vehicles will be allowed on site at any one time.
  • A maximum of two people will be allowed in each vehicle.
  • Only one person is allowed in the Community Recycling Centre area at a time (Katoomba Facility). 
  • Payment via tap and go or EFTPOS is preferable.
  • Residents must follow all instructions issued by onsite staff.
  • Residents who are unwell with any cold or flu like symptoms, or have been in contact with someone who may have contracted COVID-19, should not attend the facilities. Staff may turn you away if you have flu-like symptoms

Blaxland Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facility (RRWMF) currently provides the following free waste disposal services to the Blue Mountains community:

There is a small vehicle area that allows safe drop-off for:

  • Household recycling if source separated/sorted and uncontaminated
  • Scrap metal and car bodies
  • Car batteries, gas bottles, fire extinguishers and engine oil
  • Twice yearly collection of hazardous household chemicals
  • Televisions and computers - see our e-waste section for further details
  • If you have household chemicals, Katoomba RRWMF has facilities for disposal of certain chemicals year round.

Larger quantities of recyclables can be disposed of free of charge if source separated/sorted and uncontaminated.

Blaxland RRWMF also accepts other items for disposal. For a comprehensive list including special wastes such as asbestos, refer to our Waste Management: Fees and Charges document below. Items charged are calculated by vehicle weight on a weighbridge at the entrance to the facility.


Katoomba Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facility

49 Woodlands Road, Katoomba

  • 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday
  • 10am to 2pm on Saturdays
  • Closed Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day

The operating hours at both sites enable Council to continue to deliver a self-funding Waste Service.

At Katoomba:

  • Only small vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes are permitted;
  • All waste must be unloaded by hand - no tipping; and
  • Construction and demolition waste is not accepted. You may continue to take construction and demolition waste to Blaxland RRWMF. 

Katoomba Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facility (RRWMF) small vehicle area provides the following free waste disposal services to the Blue Mountains community:

  • Household recycling if source separated/sorted and uncontaminated;
  • Scrap metal and white goods;
  • Car batteries*, gas bottles*, fire extinguishers* and engine oil*
  • Paint*, smoke detectors*, fluoro globes and tubes*, other oil* and household batteries* (as this is a household service, a nominal 20L or 20kg limit applies. Chemicals from commercial or industrial premises will NOT be accepted).
  • Twice yearly collection of hazardous household chemicals
  • Televisions and computers* see our e-waste section for further details.
  • Polystyrene

* Non-residents can also bring these items for free to the EPA funded Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Katoomba RRWMF.

Blaxland and Katoomba RRWMF both have a Reuse Shed – this is where we turn trash into treasure. Any items too good to dismantle for recycling are given away for free!

As Katoomba RRWMF is no longer a landfill site, we cannot accept clean fill, asbestos, animal carcasses or other materials that require supervised and/or immediate burial.  The facilities for these services are available at Blaxland RRWMF only.

A Community Recycling Centre (CRC) funded by the EPA operates at Katoomba Resource Recovery and Waste Management Facility. This is a FREE service to help residents safely dispose of household problem wastes which shouldn’t be put in kerbside bins:

Items that can be dropped off

Many of these materials can be reused and recycled if processed correctly. Recycling helps our environment because it saves water, energy and natural resources.

Only household quantities of the above materials will be accepted. As a guide a maximum container of 20 litres or 20 kilograms for each of the waste items listed above.
