COVID-19 Update

From Wednesday 20 May the operating hours of our Waste Management Facilities will change:

  • Blaxland Waste Management Facility will return to their normal 7 day a week operating hours.
  • Katoomba Waste Management Facility will extend their current operating hours to four days a week and will be open Wednesday to Saturday.

To ensure the safety of staff and the community, strict restrictions will apply, including:

  • Only four vehicles will be allowed on site at any one time.
  • A maximum of two people will be allowed in each vehicle.
  • Only one person is allowed in the Community Recycling Centre area at a time (Katoomba Facility).
  • Payment via tap and go or EFTPOS is preferable.
  • Residents must follow all instructions issued by onsite staff.
  • Residents who are unwell with any cold or flu like symptoms, or have been in contact with someone who may have contracted COVID-19, should not attend the facilities. Staff may turn you away if you have flu-like symptoms

We are resuming services in a phased way, to allow us to manage physical distancing and additional cleaning requirements, and to keep you and our staff safe.

The two additional free bulky waste services, offered to assist household during the facility closures, will continue to be valid for bookings that are scheduled for kerbside collection prior to 1 July 2020.

Why isn’t the Katoomba Waste Management Facility moving back to 7 days a week like Blaxland?

We are resuming services in a phased way, to allow us to manage physical distancing and additional cleaning requirements, and to keep you and our staff safe.

Waste services are a critical service for the community, and to keep them running throughout the city we currently have 3 distinct service teams operating. Separation has been maintained and these teams do not interact with each other, to ensure that if a team was required to isolate due to COVID – 19 that we have the capacity to continue delivering waste services.

Staggering our staff this way means we are not yet able to open both facilities 7 days a week, as we do not have enough staff to keep them both operating at full capacity, while maintaining their safety.
